Once upon a time

Sometimes we have those random conversations that include statements that start out with "When we retire, . . ." or "When we live in Europe, . . .". When we first got serious SGT T used to say that, if we had kids, he wanted to name our daughter Chili. Yes, the food. Haha, I laugh it off, tell him I'm willing to offer unsavory sexual favors in exchange for final veto power on the naming issue.

Little did I know that, apparently, SGT T has entirely too much time for thinking when he is out in the field. When he got home yesterday I was in the kitchen and he was unpacking when he yelled out to me that he had an idea. He then went on to explain that if we have a girl she will be called Chili and if we have a boy he will be called Sergeant.

me: Why, that's the most redneck thing I've ever heard!

Then he clarified, first, that he is indeed serious, and second, that I get to choose. I came to the only logical conclusion I could.

me: So, what you're really saying is that you don't want to have any more children!

that is too funny. I was just saying the other day I want to name a little boy Major! Like Deacon Palmer's kid on King of Queens!

I love your husband, but what is he thinking? Does he want to have a daughter who is embarassed of her name and will hold it against him until she can legally change her name? I think it would be a cute nickname for a dad to call his kid, but not for an actual name.

LandJ: You know what? If you name your kid major, I'll let SGT T name ours Sergeant. But ONLY if we are neighbors and they can grow up being made fun of together.

Freckles: I know, right? Today I told him that we we can't name our children names that people give to their dog. He said we can do whatever we want, we'll be the parents. I tried to explain the playground factor to him but I don't think I was very persuasive.

kbdrgnfly: I did warn SGT T that when he gets back from Afghanistan we will have 2 new cats, one named Chili and one named Sergeant, in an attempt to nip this issue in the bud. Not so sure how well it will work, I think he thinks it'll be cute to have our pets and kids having matching names. I may just have to remain childless.
